Nasdaq Index specifically  we’re going to talk about both the Nasdaq Composite Index and the Nasdaq 100 my name is Barbara Armstrong I’m a coach with TD Ameritrade and delighted to be here with you. So let’s get right down to business and look at what the Nasdaq is all about so first of    all when we look at the Nasdaq Composite Index it is a market capitalization weighted index made up of approximately 3,300 common equities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange. Visit Here Safetradebinaryoptions.

They include common stocks they include real estate investment trusts or REITs they include American depository receipts now an ADR or American depository receipt is a company Alibaba ticker symbol ba-ba is one example of this of a foreign company. This is a Chinese company that has a listing on the Nasdaq and is actively traded here in the United States limited partnerships are listed on the Nasdaq also. So this index is not limited to companies solely with US headquarters which sectors make up the Nasdaq Composite Index well.

This is a tech heavy index technology can came in at 46% and this was as of May 2008 teen consumer services at just over 20% healthcare at almost 11 financials at 8 and a half industrial at 6 consumer goods at almost 5 and a half and then the last four sectors each comprised less than 1% of the Nasdaq Composite Index and those include oil and gas    telecommunications basic materials and utilities.

When we look at the Nasdaq 100 what is that made up of well it is a group of the hundred largest most actively traded US companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange it’s just a subset of the now that composite and it’s comprised of a  hundred and three symbols. Why a hundred and three because there are three companies that have to share classes represented on the index an alphabet which is Google’s parent company is one    example of that so you know it has to share classes goog Class C shares and goog L the Class A shares this index is heavily tech weighted and in fact the technology companies currently comprise over 50% of this index and the second largest sector is consumer services you  know which one you consider we’ve got the behemoth Amazon in there that’s almost 25% of this index currently.

And then our other sectors are healthcare industrial and telecommunications there are no financial services companies represented on the Nasdaq 100 so tech-heavy no financials and this index is weighted based on a modified capitalization methodology and what do we mean by that well. If one company becomes so huge that it dominates the index they skew the weighting or chair modify the weighting so which companies make up the top ten well Apple is currently number one at    eleven point nine percent with Microsoft nipping at its heels at ten point seven and then Amazon coming in at seven point nine these three together.

Comprise almost 30% of the market capitalization of the entire Nasdaq 100 then we’ve got Facebook the two alphabet companies    googan Google which together comprise eight point six percent then Intel  Comcast Cisco Systems and PepsiCo rounding out our top ten the Nasdaq 100 is comprised of a hundred companies men which are names that are familiar in    households across the country companies. Like Costco Starbucks Dollar Tree Lululemon Kraft Heinz Monster beverages eBay and t-mobile among others.

So these are companies that are part of many Americans everyday lives I hope this has shed some light on what the Nasdaq 100 and the Nasdaq Composite Index are all about I appreciate you stopping by to take in this article.
